About wireless networks

A wireless network provides convenient way of accessing internet and other online resources without having to attach your laptop to a network port. Information is transferred via electromagnetic radio waves instead of hard wired network cables.

After getting connected to the QUT Wireless network, you can check your email, access QUT Virtual, Library web site and access resources on OLT. However, you will find that the wireless network normally operates at slower speeds than a wired network.

It is highly recommended that you do not use wireless network to download large files or streaming audio/video files.

Recommended Wireless Adapters

You need a wireless network interface card that is already installed and configured in your laptop computer or a PDA. The wireless card can either be in-built into your device or you can buy an external wireless card. If you buy an external wireless card, follow the set up instructions provided with your network card.

Airspace and Wireless Policy

To ensure consistent performance and proper use of the QUT Wireless network, QUT has developed a Wireless Policy Microsoft Word Document . It is your responsibility to follow the wireless policy. The wireless policy should be read in conjunction with QUT's Information Facilities (IF) Rules.

Your responsibilities as a wireless user

Adherence to established wireless standards and policies
Implementation of recommended security software, hardware settings, and protocols on your wireless device
Compliance with relevant University policies and procedures
Reporting any issues with wireless network
