- What do I need to be able to access QUT's wireless network?
You need your QUT-Access username & password, a laptop computer or
a PDA that has wireless capability (most current laptops have this capability). However, if your device does not have wireless capability you will need to purchase a wireless network inferface card.
- How much does a wireless network interface card generally cost?
A wireless network card costs between $30 to $150.
- Where is wireless access available?
Please refer to the Wireless Coverage
section.
- Which operating systems are supported for wireless access at QUT?
Windows XP, Windows 2000 and MAC OS X operating systems are supported for
wireless access.
- What if I have an operating system that is not supported for wireless access at QUT?
Older versions of Windows, PDAs and other devices may work if you follow the Generic Instructions. However, QUT is unable to provide full support for any technical problems.
- I have a laptop computer with a wireless card. How do I set up my
laptop to access QUT's network?
Refer to the instructions on Setting up your mobile device section of this web site, depending on your wireless
device (laptop computer or a PDA).
- Do any policies apply for using QUT's wireless network?
Yes, please refer to the Airspace and Wireless Policy information under the
Getting Started section of

- Is there a charge for using QUT's wireless network?
No, you do not have to pay any additional cost to access QUT’s wireless
network.
- I have a different type of wireless card than what is recommended
or supported. Can I still use it?
Yes, you can still use your wireless card. However, However, QUT is unable to provide full support for any technical problems.
- I am having problems with using the wireless network at QUT. Who
do I contact?

- I am currently using the Cisco VPN software with an SSID called 'QUT Wireless'. Should I change to the new SSID called 'QUT'?
Yes, the new procedures are easier, no software to install, has improved security, is faster (no rate limiting) and roaming enabled (between access points).
- Can I keep using the Cisco VPN software?
You can still use Cisco VPN software for wireless access but this will be discontinued in the near future once a date has been set. Cisco VPN software is still required for both QUT Wired Access and Secure Access Service (SAS).
- Are there any health and safety issues for using wireless technology?
Research has shown that wireless technology does not pose any health risks to users. Please refer to Wireless Networks & Safety published by Cisco for further details.
