“Not so soft” projects
Some projects may be considered more ‘hardware' related than software development projects. In these cases the various software specific activities described within this Framework may not be completely relevant. However even less “soft” systems projects still need to follow a controlled and managed process.
The basic elements of Project Management and Planning, identifying requirements, documenting these requirements, designing a proposed solution, evaluating options, specifying integration or interfacing activities, identifying deficiencies or technical issues, periodic technical reviews, testing, implementing and client involvement are still all essential and relevant activities.
It is therefore highly recommended that these projects also use this Framework for guidance.
Examples include:
- System configuration changes and updates (eg. initial server installation, configuration, updates, security patches, moves)
- Storage management (initial installation, configuration, updates, upgrades, volume management, etc.)
- Application configuration changes and updates (eg. Cold Fusion, JRun, FlashCom, MS SQL Server)
- System scripts for copying, updating, health checks, etc.
- Database connections with QUT systems (eg. QV)
- QUT Layer 7 (application) switch configuration for OLT web servers (physical system and updates are performed by ITS NetApps)
- Authentication software and hardware installation, configuration and updates (eg. the TRS ISAPI filter and the ATN ‘server' hosted by TALSS but the code is maintained by ITS NetApps)
- Reporting and Monitoring – Maintenance and upkeep of weblog reporting software and hardware (WebTrends). Maintenance and upkeep of server monitoring and reporting server and software (Microsoft Operational Manager – MOM)
